From the Nasdaq Salmon Index to SISALMONI
For more than a decade, the Nasdaq Salmon Index was the reference price for Norwegian Atlantic salmon. Nasdaq stopped calculating it after 6 August 2024: several data contributors had terminated their agreements and, according to the notice published by Nasdaq, the index no longer reflected market reality. Since then, SISALMONI, administered in Paris by FinanceAgri, has served as the reference for salmon futures markets.
What happened in summer 2024
On 22 July 2024, the SISALMONI 3-6 kg index became, according to Fish Pool (Euronext group), 100% of the settlement price of the euro-denominated salmon contract listed on Euronext. On 6 August 2024, Nasdaq published its last Nasdaq Salmon Index.
What changes for users of the former index
SISALMONI continues the former index. It measures the same market, the price of fresh salmon FCA Oslo, from the invoices of a panel of Norwegian exporters, weight class by weight class, and its history goes back to 2013. Its technical requirements have been strengthened to reinforce the index: concentration caps per contributor, minimum numbers of contributors and volumes per class, and the exclusion of fixed-price contracts and intra-group invoices. Supply contracts indexed on the former index can be amended to reference SISALMONI. Such contractual use requires a licence.
A regulated benchmark
FinanceAgri has been a benchmark administrator registered under the EU Benchmarks Regulation (BMR) since 14 April 2020, supervised by the French Autorité des marchés financiers (ESMA register BMR2020001187).
